Crown Bingo 'delighted' with achievements

Union Formed For Bingo Charities

Some charities in Walker County say they're getting short-changed. They claim the area's play bingo halls should be giving them a bigger piece of the profits.

Bill Cleghorn is not pleased with the Walker County Bingo Resolution.

"The resolution clearly states that the bingo sites charities will receive all the funds after the reasonable expenses. It's questionable about what's reasonable expenses," says Cleghorn.

Walker county play live bingo halls operate under the notion that charities benefit from their profit, but the document does not specify how much the halls have to donate.

Cleghorn is now heading a county charity union for the organization's to have a voice in the matter. He says participating charities don't understand how these bingo halls generate millions of dollars, when they only see a few hundreds in profit.

"If you can't talk about it, you can't say anything about the operations of charity bingo, then there's something that needs to be looked at because somebody's hiding something," Cleghorn adds.

He believes the charities are not properly funded because they haven't taken action before. Now, he says: Those days are over.

The Walker County Commission declined to comment on the matter.

A service to the community while playing bingo

The handle on the bingo cage was spun and Jacob Gonzalez stuck his hand in to pull out the numbered ball.

"B-12," Jacob said.

Ooh's and ahh's were heard throughout the dining area of Affectionate Arms adult day care.

Jacob, a fifth-grader, and 12 other students from Chandler Elementary School helped clients at the day care play bingo.

"The first time I went to play live bingo with them I was in third grade. I was nervous," Jacob said about playing bingo with the clients.

He is the president of the student council at Chandler, which has attended Affectionate Arms for 19 years (formerly as Stanly Elementary).

"When the students first started coming to the day care they were hesitant to play bingo with the clients," said Mary Garcia, facility director. "Now they practically run in here."

The members of the student council visit the clients monthly throughout the school year.

"We try to have student council elections as early as September so the students can start attending the day care in October," said Sandy Muegge, sponsor and third-grade teacher.

The students, their parents and the sponsors bring items the clients can use around the house, like paper towels and toilet paper, as gifts for the bingo winners, Muegge said.

"I like to see a smile on their face," Jacob said. "And when they call me over to sit with them, I feel proud of myself."

For the past two years he has become acquainted with the clients and has enjoyed being able to brighten someone else's day.

"Being able to see how much we make a difference in their lives is exciting," Jacob said.

The students attend the day care once a month and have a student council meeting prior to visiting the residents.

"This month I had the students make snowmen for the clients," Muegge said. "So all the clients receive a gift."

The students play live bingo four to five games with the residents and when their visiting hour is over the clients have nothing but thanks for Muegge and the students.

"I enjoy being able to make their day happier," Jacob said.

Hundreds of people linked up at Alabama’s Gadsden State Community College to apply for jobs at a new bingo facility.

400 jobs are likely to be on offer at the bingo hall which will be located at the Little Canoe Creek industrial site in Etowah County, Alabama.

Developer CBS Supply was running the job fair for potential positions in operation, maintenance, security and food and beverage preparation.

70 percent of the employees at the bingo sites facility will have to be from Etowah County under rules imposed by the county when they permitted bingo halls to open there.

£300k winner of bingo game

A care worker took a woman she was looking after to play bingo game – and went home with a jackpot of more than £300,000.

The 42-year-old winner, who wants to remain anonymous, struck it lucky at a Gala Bingo Hall in Brighton when a ticket costing £2.50 made her the club’s biggest-ever winner.
She had only ever played bingo twice before in bingo sites online.

A similar fortune was shared between hundreds of other people because under the rules of the High 5 game she was playing half the winnings must be shared between everyone in the hall playing the same game.

Of the 320 people in the hall in Freshfield Way on Wednesday, 239 were playing Gala High 5 and walked away with £1,265 each.

Assistant manager Paul Morgan, 30, said: “It was actually quite amazing. Everything went quiet for a minute and then the whole place erupted.

“The winner was sitting right at the back of the hall and she couldn’t move from her seat for about 20 minutes.

“She was trembling and couldn’t talk. We tried to give her a drink but she couldn’t pick up the glass.

“She later told us this was only the third time she had ever played bingo.”

The winner was only at the hall at 2.30pm because she had taken one of the people she looks after to play bingo the game.

Bingo assistant Shaun Willis said: “It was brilliant because she didn’t even want to play originally. They kept saying she should play so eventually she did.

“I sat with her for a while after it was called and she was just shaking. She couldn’t dial any numbers on her phone so I had to dial her work and family.”

The Gala High 5 game has a rolling prize which was just over £700,000 on Wednesday. A player can win by calling “house” on the number 5 or a smaller prize is available if they call it on a number ending in 5.

Betty Mitchell, 76, of Sadler Way, Brighton, walked away with a £1,265 share.

She said: “It was marvellous.

We all clapped and cheered.

There wasn’t a chance to thank her. I’ll share the money with my family.”

Dorothy Emburey, 67, from Warren Crescent in Littlehampton, said: “We do a tour of the bingo halls and we haven’t seen a win like this. I’m very grateful to the lady who won.

New affiliate manager for Gala Bingo

Gala Bingo has a new affiliate manager following the resignation of David Volovici to play bingo games online.

Olivier Claude will take over the role from 8 December after Volovici announced he was leaving to pursue new opportunities.

Mecca Bingo Battle On

Mecca Bingo are certainly battling on against adversity and for once there seems to have been some good news on the horizon for the Rank Group. They have just reported that revenues are up and so are their shares after they hit an all time low of 52 pence last week. Our land based bingo clubs have took a battering over the past few years with the smoking ban coming into effect, the grossly unfair double taxation law and to top it all the change in the gambling act that see hundreds of gaming machines being removed from bingo halls up and down the UK.

Some leniency by the UK government regarding gaming machines has a bit of a knock on affect on the Rank Group as they were granted licenses for 83 adult gaming centres and 64 of these have already been implemented within their bingo halls and in there online UK bingo portals.

Mecca Bingo may have seen a 5% drop in bingo players passing through their doors, but their like for like revenue grew by 2% and it is estimated that per head players are now spending 8% more than they used to. NJ Casino Smoking Ban in Question

Atlantic City May postpone or cancel the ban on smoking in casinos scheduled to begin on October 15th.

In just over a week the casinos in Atlantic City are supposed to go 100 percent smoke free, but the ban may be temporarily on hold according to resent speculations.

The Atlantic City city council will be discussing if the ban on smoking is a good move right now with the casinos already losing money every month due to the poor economy.

The current law allows for smoking on no more then 25 percent of the casino floor, but many non smoking patrons and workers rights groups complain because the smoke does not know to not go into the rest of the casino and players and casino employees are forced to breath in second hand smoke.

The casinos are arguing that if this law is allowed to go into effect then a large group of its patrons will head to casinos in Pennsylvania or Connecticut where smoking is still allowed in the casino.

New Jersey uses the taxes from the casinos for schools, and many social programs that may be affected negatively by this ban on smoking.

The meeting is due to take place today, and many hope they will be able to announce their decision by the end of the day.
